פרשת יתרו
“Jealousy is a Poison”
פַּרְשַׁת יִתְרוֹ is the first time ה׳ spoke to the בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל at הַר סִינַי to give them the תּוֹרָה. At הַר סִינַי He announced the עַשֶׂרֶת הַדִבְּרוֹת which would be written onto the 2 לוּחוֹת. Hidden inside these 10 statements are the all of the 613 מִצְווֹת of the entire.
In the עַשֶׂרֶת הַדִבְּרוֹת, it states some of the most important rules of the תּוֹרָה. For example, we cannot serve עַבוֹדָה זָרָה, kill, kidnap/steal, or lie.
The 10th and final commandment of the עַשֶׂרֶת הַדִבְּרוֹת is that we are not allowed to be jealous of others.
Question: Why is it so terrible to be jealous? We can understand why it is bad to kill and steal. But, what is wrong with being jealous? It’s just a feeling. As long as you don’t hurt anyone else or steal from them, why does it matter that you feel jealous?
Answer: Jealousy is poisonous and toxic. When we are jealous of another person instead of being happy for him or her, we can actually make that other person feel bad.
Also, being jealous can cause us to do so many other עַבֵרוֹת. When we are jealous of others, we might start to hate them, or even want to steal from them, and maybe even hurt them (חַס וְשָׁלוֹם).
Finally, when we become jealous of someone, we forget that ה׳ is the One Who decided what everyone is going to have in life. ה׳ gives us our food, money, homes, cars, talents, and friends. Instead of being jealous, we should trust Him.
Let us be happy for each other, trust in ה׳, and have a wonderful שַׁבָּת!
