“Beautiful Inside & Out”

פַּרְשַׁת תְּצַוֶּה mainly discusses the gorgeous בִּגְדֵי כָּהוּנָה, or the special clothing worn by the כֹּהַנִים. The תּוֹרָה tells us that their purpose was “לְכָבוֹד וּלְתִפְאָרֶת,” for glory and for beauty.

Question: Where does beauty belong? On the inside or on the outside? Isn’t it the inside that counts the most? Why did the כֹּהַנִים need special clothing?

Answer: It is true that what’s on the inside is definitely what is most important. We should never judge a person just by the way he or she looks.

But, that doesn’t mean that outer beauty is not important. In last week’s פַּרְשָׁה, the Torah told us that the אֲרוֹן הַקוֹדֶשׁ needed to be covered in gold on both the inside and the outside.

How we look and dress can make a big difference. Fashion can tell a lot about a person. That is why it is so important to try to dress respectfully, with honor (and with modesty), especially when we are Davening, celebrating שַׁבָּת, and performing עַבוֹדַת ה׳.

Let us do our best to be the most beautiful Jews we can be on both the inside and out, and we should merit to see the glorious בִּגְדֵי כָּהוּנָה in the third בֵּית הַמִקְדָשׁ which should be rebuilt בִּמְהֵרָה בִּיָמֵינוּ. Have a wonderful שַׁבָּת!
