Parsha Paradise/פרשה פרדס – Emor: Is Shabbos a Yom Tov? / Why May We Cook on Yom Tov?🕯🕯🌎
https://jewishpodcasts.fm/thedatabeis/36370
Parshas Emor presents the calendar of all of the Yomim Tovim or “Mo’adim,” but begins with an apparent reference to Shabbos [Vayikra 23:2-3]:
The question, as Rashi puts it, is: “Mah Inyan Shabbos Eitzel Mo’ados?” In other words, what does Shabbos have to do with the holidays?
Now certainly, there is a basis for comparison. They’re similar in that on both Shabbos and Yom Tov, it is forbidden to engage in Melachah (creative/productive/constructive activity). In fact, Chazal formulated that “Ein Bein Shabbos L’Yom Tov Ela Ochel Nefesh Bilvad,” that broadly speaking, there is no difference between Shabbos and Yom Tov other than activities for food needs of Yom Tov (and the penalty for performing Melachah) [Megilah 1:5, 7B].
But, why did the Torah need to introduce Yom Tov with Shabbos? Shabbos is old news that has been discussed several times in the previously.
P’shat:
Netziv, following the Ramban, points out that it is specifically because of the difference between Yom Tov and Shabbos that Shabbos needed to introduce the topic. One might have thought that the Mitzvah of Simchas Yom Tov (rejoicing on Yom Tov) and the permit of “Ochel Nefesh” (food needs) might override Shabbos when Shabbos and Yom Tov coincide. But, in fact, they don’t. Yom Tov needs aren’t Docheh Shabbos.
This perhaps gives rise to another question worth considering: Why is it that Yom Tov is different than Shabbos that it permits cooking for the needs of the day?
Remez:
The Vilna Ga’on presents an incredible Remez that pulls the floor out from beneath our original question. We assumed that the Torah introduced Yom Tov with Shabbos. However, the Gra reads our Pasuk differently:
שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִים֘ תֵּֽעָשֶׂ֣ה מְלָאכָה֒ וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י שַׁבַּ֤ת שַׁבָּתוֹן֙ מִקְרָא־קֹ֔דֶשׁ כָּל־מְלָאכָ֖ה לֹ֣א תַֽעֲשׂ֑וּ…
According to the Torah, there are six days of Yom Tov on which when some Melachah may be done, i.e. Ochel Nefesh. They are the 2 Yom Tov days of Pesach, 1 day of Shavuos, 1 of Rosh HaShannah, 1 Yom Tov day of of Succos and Sh’mini Atzeres. However, there is a 7th day, Yom Kippur, which is “Shabbos Shabbason,” a complete rest, on which no Melachah may be performed, not even Ochel Nefesh.
Of course, according to the simple read, the Torah was describing a regular week and Shabbos, but apparently, Shabbos and Yom Tov are intertwined.
Drash:
Returning to Rashi, he cites in the name of the Midrash [Sifra, Emor 9:7], the following explanation for the juxtaposition between Shabbos and Yom Tov.
“…Scripture intends to teach you that he who desecrates the festivals is regarded as though he had desecrated the Shabbos, and that he who fulfills the festivals is regarded as though he had fulfilled the Shabbos.”
This explanation requires explanation. It sounds like Shabbos and Yom Tov are equal, almost like Shabbos is a Yom Tov and every Yom Tov is a Shabbos. But, we know that they have technical differences. We know that Shabbos is stricter and carries more Kedushah than Yom Tov. So, what exactly is the essence of each and the basis for the similarities and differences?
Sod:
Likutei Moharan [2:4:6] points out that the Yomim Tovim, like Shabbos called, are “Mikra Kodesh” and elaborates that the Yomim Tovim uniquely reveal and announce Hashem’s Ratzon (will) in the world. That is because on each of the Yomim Tovim, Hashem reversed the course of nature with miracles and demonstrated that there is no real “Teva” or “nature.” There is just Hashem’s Ratzon.
The miracles of Yom Tov, symbolized by Yetzias Mitzrayim, are therefore an incredible compliment to Shabbos which marks the perceived nature of Ma’aseih Bereishis. Shabbos says that Hashem created the natural world. Our stoppage of all work on Shabbos shows acknowledges Hashem’s cap on Creation, what some call “nature.” But, on Yom Tov, Hashem tweaked “nature” to see if we were still paying attention. He reversed natural order for the needs of the Nefesh of Yisrael. (Perhaps that is why Hashem permitted Ochel Nefesh on Yom Tov.)
As my Rebbi R’ Yonason Sacks cites from the first Ani Ma’amin, Hashem is the “Borei,” the Creator, i.e. Shabbos, and the “Manhig,” the constant Driver/Leader of the world, i.e. Yom Tov.
Shabbos and Yom Tov are two sides of the same coin. They testify the Ratzon Hashem as do we through their Kiyum (fulfillment).
Let us keep Shabbos and Yom Tov holy, fulfill Hashem’s Ratzon, and Hashem should guide and nature and the supernatural toward our Geulah, Bimheirah BiYomeinu! Have a wonderful Shabbos!
