פרשת בשלח
“Shabbos is Not Monday”
In פַּרְשַׁת בְּשַׁלַּח, after we left Egypt, ה׳ led the בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל into the desert and sent them food from heaven called מָן. The מָן would fall every day except for שַׁבָּת.
Question: Why did ה׳ need to make the מָן fall everyday? Why couldn’t ה׳ just make it rain מָן once and just make sure that there was enough מָן for the entire journey? And why didn’t ה׳ make the מָן fall on שַׁבָּת?
Answer: The lesson of the מָן is that, really, all of our food and comes from Hashem. If ה׳ gave us the מָן just one time, we might have forgotten that ה׳ gave it to us. Therefore, in order for us to always remember where the מָן came from, ה׳ gave it to us every single day… except for שַׁבָּת.
Why didn’t ה׳ give us מָן on שַׁבָּת? Because, even if ה׳ gave us the מָן every single day, we might have made a mistake and thought that מָן was just a part of “nature” like the weather (of course, ה׳ is in charge of that too, but the מָן needed to be seen as an open miracle). By stopping the מָן on ה׳’s special day שַׁבָּת, we would also stop, think, and remember that the מָן is from ה׳ and only falls when ה׳ wants it to.
We don’t have the מָן today. But, we still need money and food to survive. And just like ה׳ gave us the מָן, He gives us these things too. By making a בְּרָכָה before we eat, we remind ourselves that ה׳ gave us the food. By not working on שַׁבָּת, we remind ourselves that ה׳ is in charge of how much money we make. Everything we have is בְּסִייַתָּא דִשְׁמַיָא (with help from heaven).
Let us have אֶמוּנָה in ה׳’s סִייַתָּא דִשְׁמַיָא and have a wonderful שַׁבָּת!
