פרשת שמות
“A Hero Who Dares to Care”In פַּרָשַׁת שְׁמוֹת, we meet מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּינוּ. While the בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל were suffering as slaves in Egypt, ה׳ was preparing מֹשֶׁה to become His messenger to save them.
Question: Why did ה׳ choose מֹשֶׁה? What made him so special?
Answer: The תּוֹרָה doesn’t tell us why directly. But, it does tell us a few stories that show us why מֹשֶׁה was so great.
In story #1, מֹשֶׁה stopped an Egyptian from harming another Jew. In story #2, he stopped two Jews from fighting. And in story #3, he stopped the people of מִדְיָן from harming the daughters of יִתְרוֹ.
The point of these stories is simple: מֹשֶׁה cared about other people. He could not tolerate seeing someone harm another person. When one Jew lifted his hand to hit his brother, מֹשֶׁה called him a רָשָׁע. How could someone even think of harming someone else?
מֹשֶׁה realized that ה׳ only let the Jews suffer because they were fighting and speaking badly to one another. If the whole reason they were suffering was that they didn’t care about each other, then they were going to need a hero who does care. That hero was מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּינוּ.
It’s time for the suffering to end. The fighting has to stop. We need to care about one another. We need to become heroes like משֶׁה רַבֵּינוּ was.
ה׳ should give us the heart to care about our brothers and sisters and bring Moshiach, בִּמְהֵרָה בִּיָמֵינוּ. Have a wonderful שבת!Rabbi Eisenberg, Grade 3
