Parsha Paradise/פרשה פרדס – Pekudei: What Other Mishkanos Were There? ??
Audio:
“Eileh Pekudei HaMishkan Mishkan HaEidus…”-“These are the reckonings of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), the Mishkan of Testimony…”
[Shemos 38:21]
The Torah emphasizes that a reckoning was taken of none other than THE “Mishkan of Testimony.” But, why does the Torah need to say the word “Mishkan” twice? Might we have mistaken the Torah as referring to other Mishkenos? Some M’forshim actually make such an assertion that, tes, we might’ve! But, what other Mishkenos were there?
P’shat:
Ramban explains that the Torah sought to differentiate between the tent which was also called “Mishkan” and broader Mishkan HaEidus.
Bechor Shor and Chizkuni explain that indeed, there worth other Mishkenos that we might’ve mistaken this one for. What other Mishkenos? Chizkuni points to the “Mishkan Korach” (Korach’s Mishkan) among other Mishkenos that are referenced in Navi.
Although we, the current readers of the Torah, might not have given a second thought, the immediate recipients of the Torah experienced a time when the true system and center of Torah and Ratzon Hashem would be contested and contended with by another system and supposed center of Torah. But, only the Mishkan built by Moshe’s instruction and housed the Luchos HaEidus (Tablets of Testimony) could be called the Mishkan HaEidus, the Mishkan of Testimony. There was only one legitimate Mishkan.
Remez/Drash:
Rashi, Ba’al HaTurim, and many others cite the Midrashim that point out that the double language of “HaMishkan Mishkan” refers to none other than the two Batei Mikdash that would eventually be built and then taken away as collateral due to the sins of the B’nei Yisrael [Tanchuma 2, Shemos Rabbah 51:3]. The Darshan (expound) further that extra word Mishkan can be read as “Mashkon,” collateral [Ibid.].
Ba’al HaTurim also points out that the very word “Mishkan” equals 410 in Gematria (numerical value), corresponding to the 410 years the first Beis HaMikdash stood and which hosted the Hashem’s Shechinah (Divine Presence).
Sod:
Zohar [2:221B] and Rabbeinu Bachya suggest that the two specifications of the word Mishkan refer to two Mishkenos, the terrestrial one in our world and the corresponding celestial Mishkan above it. For every Divine project we build in this world, there is a correspondent project in the upper realm.
We should be Zocheh to the restoration and rebuilding of Hashem’s house in this world with Binyan Bayis Shlishi, Bimheirah BiYomeinu! Have a wonderful Shabbos and a Gutten Chodesh Adar Beis!!
