Parsha Paradise/פרשה פרדס – Pinchas: What was the Bris Shalom (Pact of Peace)? ✌🏻

In the aftermath of Pinchas’s heroic and zealous execution of Zimri for Hashem’s honor, Hashem rewards Pinchas with a Bris Shalom, a Pact of Peace. What is that?

P’shat:

Rashi defines it broadly as a gesture of good will and “friendship” to recognize the goodness Pinchas had dealt Him.

Ibn Ezra and Chizkuni suggest that the Bris granted Pinchas immunity from Zimri’s family who may seek to avenge his blood.

Although Chazal teach that Hashem only named Pinchas a Kohein at this time [Zevachim 101B], Chizkuni argues alternatively that Pinchas was already a Kohein and, through this covenant, was rewarded the rights to remain a Kohein despite spilling blood.

Netziv argues that the Bris Shalom was a covenant that reassured that Pinchas would still remain good-hearted in nature, despite the externally “cruel” act he performed.

Malbim explains that the Bris Shalom was a blessing of longevity. (Pirkei D’Rebbi Eliezer [47] Zohar [2:190A, 3:215A], and Rashi to Bava Metzia 114B all suggest that Pinchas was Eliyahu HaNavi. Ibn Ezra disagrees.)

Da’as Zikeinim and Bechor Shor suggest a possibility that Pinchas was named Kohein Meshuach Milchamah (which I’ll translate loosely as “War Chaplain”); indeed, all Milchamos Mitzvah are waged for the larger goal of peace.

Remez:

Ba’al HaTurim points out that according to tradition, the letter Vav in the word Shalom is a Vav Ketia, literally, a cut Vav (either cut short or cut in half). Thus, the word can be read as Shaleim, whole, thus Chazal teach that Pinchas could serve as a Kohein provided that he remain whole and unblemished [Kiddushin 66B].

Ba’al HaTurim adds that the Vav Ketia can be read as a Yud, alluding to ten Kohanic gifts a Kohein receives.

Finally, Ba’al HaTurim suggests that the Vav Ketia alludes to idea that Pinchas was Eliyahu whose name also lacked a Vav on a five occasions. These Vav’s were added to Yaakov’s name as collateral only to be returned when Eliyahu ushers in Moshiach. Thus, Ba’al HaTurim puts the icing on top with a final Gematria that “Shalom” equals “Zehu Moshiach”-“this is Moshiach.”

Drash:

Chazal point out in Sifrei that Hashem’s Bris with Pinchas entailed begetting children who would serve as Kohein Gadol throughout the era of Bayis Rishon.

Sod:

Zohar [1:209B] explains that one who is zealous purely for Hashem is granted immunity from the dominion of the Malach HaMoves (Angel of Death). This was the effect of the Bris Shalom. Indeed, Eliyahu HaNavi never died.

We should be Zocheh to devote our lives to Hashem, join Hashem in the Bris Shalom earning His friendship/good will, peace, longevity, immunity from all evil, and the return of Pinchas/Eliyahu HaNavi with the coming of Moshiach, Bimheirah BiYomeinu! Have a wonderful Shabbos!
