פרשת משפטים

“Free to be an Eved”

In פַּרְשַׁת מִּשְׁפָּטִים, the תּוֹרָה begins to list many of the  מִצְווֹת that the בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל were taught at הַר סִינַי. The long list begins with עֶבֶד עִבְרִי (Hebrew slave).

פַּרְשַׁת מִּשְׁפָּטִים is also when we said two of the most important words in our history. When we were asked if we would accept the תּוֹרָה, we declared: “נַֽעֲשֶׂה וְנִשְׁמָע”-“We will do, and we will listen.”

Question: Why did the list begin with עֶבֶד עִבְרִי? And why were the words “נַֽעֲשֶׂה וְנִשְׁמָע” so important?

Answer: The law of עֶבֶד עִבְרִי is that even if a person became a servant to another person, he can’t serve him forever. One day, he will have to go free so that he can serve ה׳ alone. That is because, no matter what happens, Jews are servants only to ה׳.

We were slaves in מִצְרַיִם, but eventually, we went free because our service belongs only to ה׳. That is the meaning of “נַֽעֲשֶׂה וְנִשְׁמָע.” These are the words of servants who love their true Master and are ready to work, no matter what He asks.

This year, we learned from אֶלִיעֶזֶר what it means to be a true עֶבֶד. Let’s be true עַבָדִים to ה׳ and do what He wants from us right now and have a wonderful שַׁבָּת!
