פרשת ויקרא‎

“What Can We Actually Give Hashem?”

פַּרְשַׁת וַיִּקְרָא‎ is when we learn how the בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל used the מִשְׁכָּן. How was the מִשְׁכָּן used? What was done there? It was the first center where we brought קָרְבָּנוֹת to ה׳.

Question: What exactly is the point of a קָרְבַּן? And why does ה׳ need us to bring Him any? ה׳ doesn’t need anything. The whole world and everything in it already belongs to Him!

Answer: The שׁוֹרֶשׁ of the word קָרְבַּן is ק.ר.ב which means to “come close.” The point of a קָרְבַּן is to bring us closer to ה׳. How do קָרְבָּנוֹת bring us closer to ה׳?

Of course, ה׳ doesn’t need anything from us and everything in the universe is already His. That is exactly the reason why we give Him our קָרְבָּנוֹת. By giving ה׳ back something that He doesn’t need and that we know already belongs to Him, it shows that the only reason we are doing it is to get close to Him and have a relationship with Him. That’s the lesson of קָרְבָּנוֹת!

Without the בֵּית הַמִקְדָשׁ, there are no קָרְבָּנוֹת. But, we can still show מְסִירַת נֶפֶשׁ (self-sacrifice) and come close to ה׳ by giving Him our time, energy, and concentration with our מִצְווֹת ,תְּפִילָה, and תּוֹרָה learning. Let us all grow closer to ה׳ and have a wonderful שבת!
